The Big Welsh – Urban Taphouse (Cardiff)

It’s a rare thing to find a burger that describes you, but on our Burger Bros recent outing, I saw just that at the top of the menu at Urban Taphouse. Now, I’ve just put myself on the same pedestal as a very Welsh sounding burger so I feel I should tell you why I’m qualified to judge the self-styled burger of my fathers.

1. I have three very Welsh names (Lloyd David Williams)
2. I grew up in the valleys and sound like it (innit like)
3. I come from a family of coal miners some even still work in big pit (we all like the bit when you turn the lights off)
4. If you call me English, I’ll look like you just farted in my face (I can’t help it, it’s a genetic reaction)

You may disagree, but I think I’m a good position to judge a Welsh sounding burger and as a Welsh man anything that claims to be from my motherland better be bloody good or at least better than the English equivalent.

So The Big Welsh, what is it? Who is it? How was it? Alright, I’ll tell you what it said on the menu. A Welsh twist on a classic. Beef patty, topped with Welsh cheddar, crispy Welsh bacon & pan fried leeks.

So that is what arrived, a sexy number I think you’ll agree  I even had a side of Goldie Lookin’ gherkins (battered) because as all the best women say, you can never have enough Welsh in your mouth.

After my first bite, I had an epic realisation, I had Tom Jones in a bun! It was indeed a very Welsh classic which wasn’t unusual to be loved by anyone. She had style, she had grace, she’s a winner, she’s a very tasty burger!

But why why why I hear you ask. Well, like the Welsh team the flavours were always going to be a winner. The bacon was perfect for me, crispy but not too hard, loads of character but not overpowering. The brioche bun was lightly toasted which actually added some much-needed texture to the dish. The cheese was melted and lovely, it worked perfectly with the meat. The pan-fried leeks were a nice Welsh twist, it was nice to have something a little different but that still worked with the flavours we know work so well.

The meat though, that was the Jones of the show. Well cooked, juicy but not messy, with a nice texture and bags of taste. It was the burger equivalent of what I imagine Katherine Jenkins is like in bed.

So my verdict, a very solid 4/5 It might be getting extra for saying it’s Welsh but I’m Welsh so tough shit because I loved it. A great twist on a classic executed brilliantly and not pretending to be anything it’s not. It only missed top marks because it played it safe with the flavours but there’s always room in my life for a great bacon cheeseburger. Da Iawn diolch. Proper tidy like.
