Award winning streetfood festival organisers, Street Food Circus rolled back into Cardiff for their now annual festival of foodie delights.
2016 sees some old familiar faces in a new home, with a new format and some new faces with their streetfood offerings and if they are anywhere near as good as the 2015 show, then we’re all in for a treat.
So, first things first.
Where? Sophia Gardens, Bute Park (next to Cardiff Castle)
When? Every Thursday (5pm – 11pm), Friday (5pm – 11pm), Saturday (2pm – 11pm) & Sunday (Noon – 6pm) until 25th September 2016
Where do you start? The list is like a who’s who of streetfood royalty.
Let’s break it down into the three zones and work from there.
Hangfire Southern Kitchen (formerly Hangfire Smokehouse), Big Fish Little Fish, Mr Croquewich, Dusty Knuckle, Slow Pig, Brulee Bar, Pembrokeshire Beachfood, Earlybird Bakery, The Applecart Cider Bar, Crofters, La Ffroga, Mighty Soft Shell Crab, The Spaniard Gourmet, Outpost Coffee & Ice Green Vegan Ice Cream.
The Singha Bottle Bus, The Purple Popadom Tukka Tuk, El Salsa, Little Bao Peep, Jol’s Patagonia, Bangkok Cafe, Gopals Curry Shack & Bearded Taco.
Dirty Bird Fried Chicken, Meat & Greek, Science Cream, Got Beef, Ffwrness Pizza, Lola’s Wings, Pregos Street Food, The Pickled Brisket, Cheese Truck & Frozen Margarita Bar.
*After visiting, I have found that this isn’t an extensive list, as there are other traders popping up over the period too.
And just as you thought things couldn’t get any more creative, they’ve only gone and introduced the Feast Clwb supper clubs every Thursday for the duration of the festival, which sees guest chefs take over the pop up kitchen and cater for fifty under the canvas of the big top.
I got there early (5pm) on a Friday before the masses arrived, and on a sunny day like the one we had, they most certainly did arrive. In fact, by the time I left, there was a queue outside of at least 150 people looking to get in on the streetfood action of which I had just partaken.
Whatever you’re after, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find it. On this visit, Sian had to go for Dirty Fried chicken with fries and ‘slaw. I had the Soprano burger from Got Beef. We shared a create your own pizza at Dusty Knuckle (peach, bacon and mozzarella). Dessert was from Early Bird Bakery with their Chocolate and honeycomb doughnut bites. Every single item in the list gets major thumbs up and recommendation.
The great thing about having this on my doorstep for 9 weeks is that I don’t need to eat at every stall on the first visit. I feel bad for people who get one visit and have to choose where to eat or go home stuffed to the brim. Actually, I don’t feel sorry for the ones stuffed to the brim, I am in fact a little bit jealous of them.
The set up is so much slicker than last year’s, but could still be improved for people with young kids (like me). Simon and Matt, if you want to chat about making it young family friendlier, I’m more than willing to help.
Everyone else…well, you’ll love it.
